BPI Certified Compostable Plastic Bags
Recently the office of the United States Trade Representative released a notice of product exclusions. Compostable bags certified by BPI Biodegradable Poruducts Institute are exempted from the tariffs added to Chinese products imported into U.S.
Who is BPI?
The BPI is short for Biodegradable Products Institute. It is an American organization which promotes the use, and recovery of biodegradable polymeric materials. BPI will accomplish this goal through education, adoption of scientifically based standards and cooperative activities with other organizations in the US, Canada, Europe and Japan.

Its members include leading resin suppliers such as BASF, NatureWorks LLC and Novamont; compostable product manufacturers and distributors such as BioBag.
Can American companies import compostable bags from China without tariff?
Yes. The USTR has issued a tariff exemption on the compostable bags from China. All importers in USA can import this product without tariffs. But the Polyethylene bags are not exempted from the trade war tariff.
